Medical Design Technology published a two-part series of articles asking whether design software could replace physical prototyping in the medical prototyping field.
The answer was "no". The question was answered loud and clear by experts from the field.
Shengqi, a supplier of medical test mold parts, would like to share with you some of the considerations and reasoning of the experts.
"Moving from concept to production is inherently non-linear. Each step from design to model to prototype to production requires modifications and feedback. The software used to design medical devices has become so powerful that it does allow for a great deal of product refinement and a level of testing, but it is not good at solving unknown problems. Software design often fails to consider how the prototype will be used within material design constraints or in conjunction with other parts and processes.
As Steve Fidrych of Mack Prototype, Inc. puts it.
"Many expensive design and process modifications can be avoided by proving concept solutions that are physical parts produced by appropriate prototyping processes for materials that closely reflect end-use characteristics ......"
Human factors are equally important in assessing how users will interact with medical devices. How a device is handled and used is difficult to predict from computer models. Because of these differences, Shengqi utilizes both software capabilities and physical prototyping methods when performing industrial design and prototyping for our clients. While attention to detail is critical when prototyping these designs, physical prototyping gives you an understanding of the product that the design software itself cannot always provide.
Riley Phipps from Value Plastics stated.
"...... Nothing can really replace the benefits of having physical parts, especially those designs that incorporate usability into the specifications."
Also related to the human element are the tangible products available for marketing. There really is no substitute for physical samples when it comes to presenting products to medical professionals.
At Shengqi, as a professional mold parts fabricator and manufacturer, we focus on taking your ideas from concept to production-ready within tight deadlines. Our prototype designers focus on creating products for all verticals including the medical field, providing excellent model parts, prototype molds for all industries.
